A Nice Blast from the Past
I tripped across a nice review of the work we did on the ForkUnion.com website, published in a national blog back in 2008.
"We came across a school website that got us to stop and take a look the other day. The Fork Union Military Academy’s site makes the most use out of more web tools than any school site that I’ve seen in recent memory."
We originally built the ForkUnion.com site in 2004. Many of the features we wanted for the site were not as readily available in a single content management system, so we cobbled together several different Perl, Javascript, and PHP scripts to build the kind of interactive site we wanted. We used a nice calendar script for events, PHPBB for our forums, and Movable Type for our blogs/news stories and basic content management.
This site was completely rebuilt in the summer of 2010 on the Drupal content management system, but I still recall the earlier site quite fondly as an early example of integrating Web 2.0 features and breaking new ground in the area of school websites.
